Ideal and real self

To accept my real self means falling short of so many things, as I aspire to become my ideal self there are so many unanswered questions - Is the ideal self for me defined by the external world, my experiences and internalizations; is it too high an expectation; or too low to satisfy my real self?

Depending on the answers to the above from my real self, my effort to become the ideal self appear futile, too easy or needless :)-

At what point do these two meet and is that what is known as integrity in terms of thought, word and deed? Kaya, Vacha, Manasa - in total harmony

A very good post.

Ideal self, I guess, is being useful to someone if and when possible. Weighing ourselves against an external world is a little dicey, for how do we determine the ideal external world for us weigh against.

Better still is to have an internal balance among four parameters:
1. physical (good health),
2. intellectual (knowledge),
3. emotional (sensitivity and sensibility), and
4. spiritual (not necessarily belief in God, but a belief in things beyond the worldly.)

Idealself? When ideal state is not your present state, how can it be "self"? Realself is yourself, I agree. But what how do you determine what is ideal? Through your perception, right? Your perception is part of your current realself. So not only the external environ determines what an ideal self is, your perception, the way you perceive yourself also go to make the idealself. Hope I conveyed my thinking. Madam, you are heavy! Please don't let this stop your such postings! lol :-))

Very nice post.
Perhaps all of us aspire to an "ideal" and our vision of the "ideal" is shaped by our environment and experience - sociocultural. Heros and Gods in epics were perhaps attempts at defining their vision of "ideal" for all times. Such a level of perfection is normally "too high an expectation" but worth striving for - like being a sthitha pragya or a karmayogi.
I suppose the harmony of thought, word and deed is an essential prerequisite in the every day march toward attainment of the ideal.

Nice post. I think the whole purpose of life is to find the balance between thought, word and deed. For this purpose weighing against the world is futile since world is just the reflection of our mind. I guess if start analyzing our mind (through practices such as meditation), we can try to identify our ideal self as well as the real Self.

pradeep - what you have written makes sense

jinguchakka -the ideal will always have the loading of the real self, I agree. Not sure what you mean by "heavy" :)-

usha - thanks

Kasthuri - introspection seems to be the path to overcome this dichotomy and struggle. Thank you so much for this perspective. There is a book titled "why am I afraid to tell you who I am, because you may not like it and that it what I am" and when I say this I also realize that the you is also the self and how difficult it is to accept us our inner self

In science, an ideal machine is always theoretical. A mirage.

Also, "ideal" is defined by someone (oneself or a third person).

The question is : How is that person qualified to define "ideal". Who is to set benchmarks?

Will give a try...

Ideal self to me is "absolute zero" virtual state.
Realising self is great and probly the first step towards ideal self?

I would rather accept real self working towards ideal self.

When I said Ideal self, I was referring to characteristics, qualities and traits that we would like to see us possess and those over time get so ingrained in us we become that goal (ideal) and then it becomes the real - thanks dubukku

after living a life, how ever long that be, i think one does get to know who this ideal person is. if it were the external world which decided who the ideal person is, the question would not arise. the question arises, methinks, because we are so bogged down by the obstacles that come in our path that we are made to think about the worth of our path to the ideal (idol).

"Ideal" self is a maya. Its just what u perceive as what others perceive as what u r. People are always two-sided. One who they are, the other who they try to be for others. We are always inbetween living fro ourselves and living for others. As u rightly pointed out, its in finding that balance that defines a person. But aint finding tht balance too idealistic as well?

1. Material (strength, valor, money, power)
2. Intellectual (Knowledge and wisdom)
3. Aesthetic
4. Spiritual
5. Emotional
6. Cultural (deeds, karma)

Karma artha n kama define these six spectres of achievements. Without undertaking and understanding these, you will not be able to recognise Nirvana, let alone attain it!
